I’m pretty sure what I experienced at my last visit with James Forester is considered harassment… As I was making casual conversation, I mentioned how I just got back from Miami, to which he responded “Did you keep your top on while you were on the beach?” I’d like to point out the irrelevance of the answer, the fact that my dentist was asking me that question at all was inappropriate and just plain weird. But I was already sitting in the chair, with another dental hygienist on the other side of me, so I didn’t know what to do. I said “Yes I did” with a polite laugh, then he went on with a story about him and his wife being at South Beach one time, where he saw this young woman going into the water, walking with her arms crossed over her chest. He said he took a moment to realize, but he eventually noticed she had her top off. Then he went on to joke about how he noticed more people nude on the beach, but specifically people he wouldn’t want to look at. THEN he said the one he’d want to see is ironically the one covering herself up… the dental hygienist in the room (also a woman) simply laughed. I felt so incredibly uncomfortable at the time, I laughed too, but I couldn’t believe what I just heard, and we were all just laughing about it? I wish I actually said something then, instead of freezing up and just waiting for the appointment to be over. Every person I’ve told about this experience since thought I should’ve said something at the time. The fact that I am a young woman myself, maybe more easily able to see that young woman’s position on the beach with men like him staring at her while they sit next to their wives, may give me some bias I recognize, but that is not what is relevant here either. This man, who is the boss, has created a work environment for him to safely say things like this and just laugh it off as a joke. Even though I myself, and the employee of his laughed that day, there was absolutely nothing funny about this joke, and now you’ve lost a client, but now I have the best reason to give my first ever bad review.Edited, PS: As a lifelong client of Dr. Broom’s, it breaks my heart to see this practice go to a man like this.
